Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has warmly welcomed Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew as he visits Australia, marking a historic moment for the Greek Orthodox community. The visit coincides with the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Archdiocese of Australia, a milestone for more than 400,000 Greek Orthodox faithful across the nation.

On Saturday, His All-Holiness participated in a procession to the Annunciation of Our Lady Cathedral in Redfern, located in Sydney’s inner city. This event commemorated the Greek Orthodox diocese’s centenary in Australia.

“This is a historic occasion and a great honor for our nation,” Prime Minister Albanese stated at the cathedral. He praised the archdiocese for its century-long role in fostering unity and embodying the principles of love and compassion central to the Christian faith.

In light of this significant anniversary, Mr. Albanese announced a $25 million contribution from the federal government to restore the Redfern cathedral and enhance St Andrews Theological College.
