«Φάρος Ελπίδας» στη Νέα Υόρκη: Ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης τίμησε τους ήρωες της 11ης Σεπτεμβρίου

Με λόγο βαθιά συγκινητικό και φορτισμένο, ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης κ.κ. Βαρθολομαίος απηύθυνε ομιλία κατά το δείπνο «Beacon of Hope», που πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Νέα Υόρκη στις 19 Σεπτεμβρίου 2025, προς τιμήν των πρώτων που θυσιάστηκαν στην τρομοκρατική επίθεση της 11ης Σεπτεμβρίου 2001. Το δείπνο διοργανώθηκε από τον Ιερό Εθνικό Προσκυνηματικό Ναό Αγίου Νικολάου στο Ground Zero, ως εναρκτήριο μιας παράδοσης τιμής, μνήμης και ελπίδας.

Ο Πατριάρχης ξεκίνησε με αναφορά στους ηρωικούς πυροσβέστες, αστυνομικούς και διασώστες που «τόλμησαν να εισέλθουν εκεί όπου και οι άγγελοι θα δίσταζαν», για να σώσουν συνανθρώπους τους, χάνοντας τη ζωή τους. Χαρακτήρισε τη θυσία τους ως «λάμψη άρρητης δόξας» και αληθινό υπόδειγμα της αγάπης που δίδαξε ο Χριστός: «Μείζονα ταύτης ἀγάπην οὐδεὶς ἔχει, ἵνα τις τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ θῇ ὑπὲρ τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ».

Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά έκανε στον πατέρα Mychal Judge, τον πρώτο επίσημο θανόντα της ημέρας, έναν ταπεινό ιερέα του Πυροσβεστικού Σώματος, ο οποίος έπεσε προσευχόμενος δίπλα στους διασώστες. Όλους τους χαρακτήρισε «αστέρια στον ουρανό» και «φανούς ελπίδας» για τις μελλοντικές γενιές, όπως άλλοτε το άστρο της Βηθλεέμ καθοδήγησε τους Μάγους. Στον ίδιο εξωτερικό τοίχο του Ναού, δίπλα στα λόγια του Χριστού, έχει χαραχθεί και απόσπασμα από τον Επιτάφιο του Περικλή: «ἡ δόξα αὐτῶν παρὰ τῷ ἐντυχόντι αἰεὶ» – η δόξα τους θα μείνει αιώνια.

Ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης συνέδεσε ποιητικά τον «Φάρο» του Φαναρίου στην Κωνσταντινούπολη με τον νέο «Φάρο» στο Ground Zero. Όπως είπε, και τα δύο σημεία αποτελούν φώτα καθοδήγησης για έναν κόσμο σε κρίση. «Το Πατριαρχείο μας γνωρίζει τι σημαίνει να οδηγείσαι από τη θυσιαστική αγάπη. Το όνομά μας –Φανάρι– σημαίνει ακριβώς αυτό: φως».

Μίλησε και για τον συμβολισμό της φύτευσης μιας μυρτιάς στον κήπο του Ναού –με χώμα από την Ίμβρο, το γενέθλιο νησί του– ως πράξη ένωσης της Παλαιάς και της Νέας Πατρίδας, αλλά και ως ελπίδα για τη ζωή αυτή και την αιώνια.

Ιδιαίτερη στιγμή στην ομιλία του ήταν η αναφορά στην εικόνα της Αναστάσεως που κοσμεί το εσωτερικό του Ναού, εμπνευσμένη από την Μονή της Χώρας στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Όπως είπε, «αν κοιτάξετε προσεκτικά, θα δείτε πίσω από τον Αναστάντα Χριστό τούς ήρωες της 11ης Σεπτεμβρίου –πυροσβέστες, αστυνομικούς και διασώστες– με τα διακριτικά της γενναιότητας. Είναι εκεί, γιατί η αγάπη τους ήταν αναστάσιμη».

Κλείνοντας, ο Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος προσευχήθηκε το Προσκύνημα του Αγίου Νικολάου να συνεχίσει να είναι τόπος προσευχής, μνήμης και ίασης. «Ο αναστημένος Ναός του Αγίου Νικολάου ας μεταδίδει το φως τους – που είναι στην ουσία το φως του Χριστού – σε όλη την πόλη και στον κόσμο, ως φάρος Ελπίδας, Πίστης και Αγάπης».

At the Beacon of Hope Dinner of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine

Your Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America,

Honorable Jessica Tisch, Police Commissioner of New York City,

Esteemed Members of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey,

Most Reverend Metropolitans and Right Reverend Bishops,

Esteemed Members of the Friends of Saint Nicholas,

Beloved Children in the Lord,

We rise this evening to pay tribute to the courageous men and women who braved to enter the fated Twin Towers – a place where Angels might have feared to tread – in order to save their fellow human beings, at the expense of their own lives. We are well-pleased that our humble person could be present and help to inaugurate what promises to be a most significant tradition of the Saint Nicholas National Shrine.

For as the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, inscribed in the marble on the exterior of the Shrine, say so majestically:

Μείζονα ταύτης ἀγάπην οὐδεὶς ἔχει, ἵνα τις τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ θῇ ὑπὲρ τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ.

Greater love has no one than this, to sacrifice your life for your friends.[1]

The heroic First Responders of every emergency service – of the New York City Police Department, the Fire Department, and the Port Authority – those who gave their lives on that fateful and terrible day can never be forgotten.

It is most fitting that this inaugural event is in their memory, and that their sacrifice is presented as our “Beacon of Hope.” For their devotion to duty, and their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others, is truly an illumination of ineffable glory.

They shine as the stars in the Heavens, and like the sojourners of centuries past who journeyed guided by such celestial beacons – just as the Magi followed the Star all the way to Bethlehem – we shall invariably look to these stellar “Beacons of Hope” for inspiration and a moral compass for our lives. As the Oration of Pericles – also inscribed beneath the words of our Lord on the exterior of the Shrine states:

… ἡ δόξα αὐτῶν παρὰ τῷ ἐντυχόντι αἰεὶ.

… their glory survives in everlasting remembrance.

Somehow, we think it is not without significance that the first casualty listed for that terrible day was a beloved Chaplain of the Fire Department, Father Mychal Judge. That shepherd of souls spared nothing in his prayerful and brave stand with his fellow rescuers.

All those who perished in their valiant attempts to save others are never to be forgotten. We Orthodox Christians say “Memory Eternal!”, Αιωνία η μνήμη, encouraging our own minds and hearts to hold them dear, even as we know that God will never forget them in His eternal embrace.

At the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, we understand the radiance that comes from self-sacrificing love. We reside in the portion of the City called the “Phanar,” which means “Lighthouse.” The sacrifice of many Martyrs and Saints emblazons the history of the Mother Church of Orthodox Christianity with signal fires to light our path into the future.

And the sacrifice of the “Beacons of Hope” that we pay due honor and respect also are, as the Psalmist says:

A lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. [2]

They have shown us the most excellent way of love,[3] as a shining gift to every generation who will pause to behold the radiance of their sacrifice, and recognize the supreme dignity and purity of their humanity.

We came to the Shrine yesterday, to connect both these beacons of light and hope – the Phanar and Ground Zero, by transplanting the very earth of our Old World, into the soil of this New World.

And in this soil of the West we mingled soil from the East, from the lands and seas out of which emerged the Omogeneia of our People, scattered like good seed in a Diaspora of Divine Providence.

In this conjunction of different lands, we planted a Myrtle Tree on the south side of the Shrine, in Xanthippi’s Garden, as a sign of our hope in life in this world, and in the next. We pray that the Saint Nicholas Shrine, in which prayer and memory endure, will always prosper its mission of bringing healing and consolation, tolerance and understanding, to this remarkable City, to this exceptional Nation, and to a world whose need for these very virtues and graces is greater than ever. We know that in these profound symbols, all of you will find strength to assist in that mission.

Dear Friends:

We gathered together this evening to honor those whose “last full measure of devotion” is the healing balm to cure and restore our hearts that were broken by their sacrifice. That is why in our Christian Faith, the ultimate hope is the hope in the Resurrection.

The Icon of the Resurrection in the Shrine – inspired by an archetypical masterwork of the Chora Monastery in the Queen of cities – manifests that hope in the Resurrection unto Eternal Life, for the “Beacons of Hope” we honor tonight.

The next time you visit the Shrine, look up to the Icon. In the company of the Saints behind the Risen Lord Jesus, you will see Police, Firefighters, and the EMTs who sacrificed themselves that day. You will see them in the insignia of their valor – representing all their brethren who gave the ultimate offering of their lives for the sake of others.

Thus, the resurrected Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine will continually reflect their light – which is truly the light of Christ – throughout this City and around the world, as a beacon of Hope, of Faith, and of Love.
