MESSAGE
OF HIS ALL-HOLINESS ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH BARTHOLOMEW

Prot. No. 797

To His Beatitude Shio III, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi, and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Apkhazeti, our beloved Brother and concelebrant in Christ: Grace be unto you and peace from God.

From the Venerable Centre of Orthodoxy at the Phanar, we greet Your Beatitude and the plenitude of the Church of Georgia with brotherly affection as You celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion in Georgia. In spirit, we join all who gather in the Patriarchal Cathedral of Svetitskhoveli on the feast of Svetitskhovloba, which honours the Lord’s Robe and the Life-giving Pillar, to offer thanksgiving for this momentous chapter in the history of the God-loving Georgian people.

At the heart of this commemoration stands Saint Nino, Equal to the Apostles and Enlightener of Georgia. Coming from Cappadocia, she brought the preaching of Christ to ancient Iberia, and her labours led to the conversion of King Mirian and Queen Nana. The grapevine cross associated with her mission remains a cherished sign of the power of the Crucified and Risen Lord. Her example teaches every generation that the Gospel is communicated through lives given to God in prayer and loving service.

Over the centuries, the Georgian Church has nurtured this apostolic inheritance through the steadfast devotion of her faithful, the witness of her martyrs, and the ascetic endeavour of her monastics. Even amid severe trials, the confession of the Orthodox faith has continued to sustain the spiritual life of the people. The sacred temples of Mtskheta bear eloquent testimony to this enduring bond between Christian worship and the history of the nation. We also welcome the international symposium organised in Tbilisi to study Georgia’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

The observance of this anniversary places before us a continuing responsibility. Those who receive the faith through Baptism are called to live it in their daily conduct. The young are strengthened by sound teaching and by the example of elders who follow the Gospel. Those burdened by poverty, illness, or loneliness need to find within our communities the compassion of the Saviour. May this jubilee renew the resolve of all to answer that calling and to uphold the dignity of every human person.

Your Beatitude, the joy of Your Church is shared by the whole Orthodox family. In the words of Scripture, we confess “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (Ephesians 4:5). The particular gifts of each local Church enrich our communion in the one Body of Christ. May these celebrations deepen the bonds between us and strengthen our readiness to serve together, so that our witness before the world may manifest the reconciliation and hope bestowed by the Saviour.

In March of this year, we stood with Your Church in Tbilisi and presided at the funeral of the ever-memorable Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II. We continue to pray for his eternal repose. To Your Beatitude, in these early months of Your Primatial ministry, we offer our heartfelt wishes for wisdom and fortitude in guiding the flock entrusted to Your care.

Through the intercessions of the Most Holy Theotokos, Saint Nino, and all the saints of Georgia, may our Lord Jesus Christ preserve Your Beatitude and the entire Georgian people in health and concord. Upon the Hierarchy, clergy, monastics, and faithful assembled for this sacred anniversary, we invoke His abundant grace and blessing.

At the Ecumenical Patriarchate, 12 October 2026

Your Beatitude’s beloved Brother in Christ,

† BARTHOLOMEW
Archbishop of Constantinople–New Rome
and Ecumenical Patriarch
