Alla fine del suo discorso Papa Francesco ha chiesto la benedizione del Patriarca Bartolomeo e si è chinato davanti a lui per ricevere la benedizione. Il Patriarca lo ha baciato sul capo. È un gesto fortemente simbolico quello che conclude la giornata. È ormai calata la sera a Istanbul, e nella vigilia della festa di Sant'Andrea, patrono del patriarcato ortodosso, Francesco varca la soglia della chiesa insieme al fratello Bartolomeo. La preghiera è un incontro breve, un anticipo di quanto accadrà domani, quando il Pontefice assisterà alla Divina Liturgia ortodossa celebrata dal Patriarca ecumenico. All'ingresso, il Papa ha venerato una grande icona ricoperta d'argento.

Nel suo saluto di benvenuto, Bartolomeo definisce Francesco «latore di amore del Protocorifeo (cioè l'apostolo Pietro, ndr) verso il proprio fratello, il Primo chiamato (cioè l'apostolo Andrea)». Il Patriarca ricorda le «analoghe visite dei vostri venerabilissimi predecessori», citando Paolo VI, Giovanni Paolo II e Benedetto XVI. E parla della «volontà» di Papa Bergoglio e della «santissima Chiesa di Roma di proseguire il fraterno e costante cammino con la nostra Chiesa ortodossa, per il ristabilimento della completa comunione». La venuta del Papa, per Bartolomeo «è un fatto storico e ricco di buoni auspici per il futuro».
Il Patriarca, ringraziando i cattolici per la per la restituzione delle reliquie di santa Eufemia, cita san Basilio e san Giovanni Crisostomo. E aggiunge: «Questi santi Padri, sul cui insegnamento si è fondata la nostra comune fede durante il primo millennio, siano intercessori presso il Signore, affinché possiamo ritrovare la piena comunione tra le nostre chiese, compiendo così la sua santa volontà».
«Mentre le esprimo il mio sentito grazie per la sua fraterna accoglienza - gli risponde nel suo saluto Francesco - sento che la nostra gioia è più grande perché la sorgente è oltre, non è in noi, non è nel nostro impegno e nei nostri sforzi, che pure doverosamente ci sono, ma è nel comune affidamento alla fedeltà di Dio».
Parlando della pace e della gioia «che il mondo non può dare, ma che il Signore Gesù ha promesso ai suoi discepoli, e ha donato loro da risorto», Bergoglio ha aggiunto: «Andrea e Pietro hanno ascoltato questa promessa, hanno ricevuto questo dono. Erano fratelli di sangue, ma l'incontro con Cristo li ha trasformati in fratelli nella fede e nella carità. E in questa sera gioiosa, in questa preghiera vigiliare vorrei dire soprattutto: fratelli nella speranza».

At the end of his speech, Pope Francis asked for Patriarch Bartholomew’s blessing and bowed down before him to receive it. Bartholomew then kissed Francis on the head. And so, the second day of the papal visit concluded with a highly symbolic gesture. Night had already fallen in Istanbul on the eve of the Feast of St. Andrew, Patron Saint of the Orthodox Patriarchate, as Francis entered the Church of St. George with his brother Bartholomew. Their moment of prayer was brief and gave the world a taste of what is to happen tomorrow when the Pope attends the Divine Orthodox Liturgy celebrated by the Ecumenical Patriarch. At the entrance to the church, the Pope venerated a large silver-plated icon.
In his welcoming speech, Bartholomew said Francis “translat[ed] the love of the Chief Apostle (the Apostle Peter, Ed.) to his brother, the First Called Apostle (Andrew).” The Patriarch recalled “similar visits by [His] Eminent predecessors”, quoting Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI. He spoke about Francis’ “will” and that of the “most Holy Church of Rome” to continue the fraternal and stable advance with the Orthodox Church for the restoration of full communion between Our Churches”. Bartholomew said he sees Francis’ visit as “an historical event filled with favourable signs for the future”.
The Patriarch thanked Catholics for returning the relics of St. Euphemia and also mentioned St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom. “May these holy Fathers, on whose teaching our common faith of the first millennium was founded, intercede for us to the Lord so that we may rediscover the full union of our Churches, thereby fulfilling His divine will.”
“As I express my heartfelt “thank you” for your fraternal welcome, I sense that our joy is greater because its source is from beyond; it is not in us, not in our commitment, not in our efforts – that are certainly necessary – but in our shared trust in God’s Faithfulness,” Francis responded in his own greeting.
Speaking about “the joy and the peace that the world cannot give, but which the Lord Jesus promised to his disciples and, as the Risen One,” Francis added: “Andrew and Peter heard this promise; they received this gift. They were blood brothers, yet their encounter with Christ transformed them into brothers in faith and charity. In this joyful evening, at this prayer vigil, I want to emphasize this; they became brothers in hope.”
