One year ago, on September 12, 2018, Metropolitan Seraphim of Piraeus, in a television interview, was asked why the Ecumenical Patriarchate accepted the request of Ukraine for the granting of Autocephaly. Metropolitan Seraphim answered clearly and emphatically: Because Ukraine is a canonical territory of the Ecumenical Patriarchate! Also, Metropolitan Seraphim mentioned the correct ecclesiastical principle, that the Ecumenical Patriarchate has the exclusive privilege of giving, but also taking back, Autocephaly to Local Churches.Just a year later, on September 12, 2019, Metropolitan Seraphim published a lengthy article in which he challenged and contradicted what he said on television then.
The question is what happened within a year? Why is Metropolitan Seraphim writing the opposite today? Why does he deny the rights of the Ecumenical Patriarchate which he publicly proclaimed a year ago?
