Ukrainians have never asked and will not ask Putin for permission to an independent church - President about granting autocephaly to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church

During a speech at the presentation of His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk's book “Dialogue Heals Wounds”, President Petro Poroshenko emphasized that the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church is an important component of the Ukrainian statehood.
The Head of State appealed to the audience and noted that “today all are very happy people, because they have a good opportunity to have a meaningful dialogue with the Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav”.
The President added that he sometimes has pleasure of having a conversation with His Beatitude. "Sometimes these dialogues go very far and we are discussing the issues of state formation ... For the creation of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church is a state formation," Petro Poroshenko emphasized.
The President noted that everything in Ukraine takes place with the support of God: "The Lord is with Ukraine, he helps us. He helps build our state, he helps build our army ... he helps build a Ukrainian nation, he helps build and protect the Ukrainian language. He helps protect and create the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church".
"Most of you, if you had heard a year ago that we would come so close to the Tomos, would have said that it’s impossible. That the Byzantines will not have enough determination to give a blessing. But there are less and less doubts. I will not call the date intentionally ... But I can say for sure - we are on the finish line," Petro Poroshenko said.
The Head of State especially emphasized: "It has long been clear to everybody that Ukrainians have never asked and will not ask Putin for the right to have an independent church. This is our way to the temple, we resolutely walk this way and overcome all the obstacles with God's help".
