Zakynthos: Prayerful devotion at the summer ‘Basimata’ of Saint Dionysios

(The term «Μπασίματα» (Basimata) refers to the traditional liturgical procession/ritual of the bringing-in or entrance of the relics of Saint Dionysios, a local devotional practice on Zakynthos)

The three-day summer Feast of Saint Dionysius culminated on Tuesday morning, 26 August 2025, namely the anniversary of the Transfer of the Saint of Forgiveness, Saint Dionysios, from the Strofades Islands to Zakynthos, a historical event of 1717.

The Hierarchical Liturgy, which was celebrated, was attended by Their Eminences, Metropolitan Theodoritos of Laodicea, Metropolitan Ioannis of Zambia and Mozambique, and Metropolitan Dionysios IV of Zakynthos, while His Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Dodoni, was present at the altar and joined in prayed. The holy sermon was preached from the pulpit by Archimandrite Dionysios Lykogiannis, Preacher of the Holy Metropolis of Zakynthos.

Subsequently – as is customary – the threefold procession of the venerable Body of the honoured Saint took place within the Church, reverent supplication before Him, and His deposition in the reliquary of His permanent safekeeping.
